Financial Literacy Resources

Financial literacy is essential for making sound decisions about paying for college and managing money during and after school. Our financial literacy resources cover a wide range of topics, from understanding student loans and creating budgets to building credit and planning for long-term financial goals.

Understanding Student Financial Aid

We provide comprehensive guides explaining different types of financial aid, including grants, scholarships, work-study programs, and student loans. Students learn how to compare financial aid packages, understand the true cost of attendance, and make informed decisions about borrowing. Our resources include calculators for estimating loan payments, understanding interest rates, and planning repayment strategies.

Money Management for Students

Our collection includes practical resources on budgeting, saving, and managing expenses during college. Students can access templates for creating personal budgets, learn strategies for reducing college costs, and discover tips for balancing work and academics. We also provide information about banking services, credit cards, and building a positive credit history.

Financial literacy workshops are offered quarterly, covering topics such as understanding credit scores, avoiding predatory lending, managing student loan debt, and planning for financial independence after graduation.

Computer Lab and Technology Access

Recognizing that not all students have reliable access to technology at home, we maintain a fully-equipped computer lab available for student use. The lab features modern computers with high-speed internet access, printers, scanners, and all necessary software for completing college applications, writing essays, and conducting research.

Students can schedule appointments to use the computer lab for application submissions, ensuring they have dedicated time and technical support when needed. Our staff is available to assist with technical issues, answer questions about online applications, and provide guidance on using various educational platforms and resources.

Available Technology Services

  • Document creation and editing with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • High-quality printing and copying services for application materials
  • Scanning and digital file management for organizing documents
  • Video conferencing capabilities for virtual college tours and interviews
  • Access to online test preparation platforms and educational software
  • Technical support and troubleshooting assistance from trained staff

Peer Mentoring Programs

Our peer mentoring program connects current high school students with college students and recent graduates who have successfully navigated the college application and financial aid process. These mentors provide valuable insights, share their experiences, and offer encouragement and support throughout the application journey.

Mentors are carefully selected and trained to provide accurate information and positive guidance. They meet with mentees regularly, either in person or virtually, to discuss progress, answer questions, and provide feedback on application materials. The program creates a supportive community where students can learn from those who have recently experienced the same challenges and successes.

Program Benefits

Students participating in the peer mentoring program report increased confidence in their ability to complete applications, better understanding of the college selection process, and reduced stress during the application period. Mentors help students set realistic goals, stay organized with deadlines, and maintain motivation throughout the often lengthy application process.

"Having a mentor who had just gone through the process made such a difference. She helped me understand what colleges were really looking for and gave me confidence that I could succeed. I don't think I would have applied to as many schools or received as much scholarship money without her support." - Maria Rodriguez, Class of 2025

Partnerships with Colleges and Universities

Friends of The Petaluma has established partnerships with over 200 colleges and universities across the country. These partnerships provide students with unique opportunities to connect directly with admissions representatives, learn about specific programs and opportunities, and gain insider knowledge about the application process at different institutions.

Direct Access to Admissions Representatives

Throughout the year, we host visits from college admissions representatives who meet with students, answer questions, and provide information about their institutions. These visits give students the opportunity to make personal connections with colleges, learn about application requirements and deadlines, and understand what makes each institution unique.

Our partnerships also facilitate virtual college tours, information sessions, and application workshops led by admissions staff. Students can participate in these events from our facility, ensuring they have access to the same opportunities as students who might be able to visit campuses in person.

Special Programs and Opportunities

Many of our partner institutions offer special programs for students working with Friends of The Petaluma, including application fee waivers, expedited review processes, and dedicated scholarship opportunities. These partnerships help reduce barriers to college access and increase the likelihood that students will find institutions that are good fits for their academic and personal goals.
